Among these are the unlikely heroes known as “riot dogs,” stray dogs who have fearlessly stood alongside protesters during moments of civil unrest. These canine companions, particularly notable in countries like Greece and Chile, have become enduring symbols of resistance, loyalty, and the universal fight for justice.

Loukanikos: The Sausage Dog of Resistance

Loukanikos (Greek for “sausage”), also affectionately known as Louk, was a stray dog who became an iconic figure during the protests in Athens against austerity measures imposed by the IMF and ECB. Present at almost every demonstration until 2012, Loukanikos stood by protesters even when tensions escalated into violence.

One poignant moment in Loukanikos’ legacy occurred during a police union strike in Athens. Witnesses recount how the dog, initially confused by the two opposing groups of uniformed policemen, ultimately sided with those being attacked—a testament to his instinct for justice. Tragically, Loukanikos’ health deteriorated due to prolonged exposure to tear gas and chemicals during protests, but he lived his final days in comfort with a caretaker, passing peacefully in 2014.

Kanellos: The First Riot Dog

Before Loukanikos, there was Kanellos (“cinnamon”), a mixed-breed stray who gained fame during the 2008 Greek riots. Frequently seen amidst protesters, Kanellos embodied the spirit of resistance. Students from the National Technical University of Athens took special care of him, even providing a wheelchair in his later years when arthritis took its toll. Kanellos lived indoors with his student caretakers until his passing, leaving behind a legacy of solidarity.

Thodoris: A Look-Alike Successor

Thodoris, believed to be one of Kanellos’ offspring, carried forward the tradition of the riot dogs. With his light golden coat and distinct blue collar, Thodoris became a familiar presence during protests, symbolizing resilience and the enduring bond between humans and animals in the face of adversity.

Chile’s Negro Matapacos: The People’s Dog

Across the Atlantic, in Chile, another riot dog captured hearts and became a symbol of defiance. Negro Matapacos (“Black Cop-killer”), a stray with a distinctive black coat and red bandana, stood alongside student protesters during the 2011–2013 Chilean student demonstrations. Known for his loyalty and courage, Matapacos became a cultural icon, celebrated in murals, posters, and even papier-mâché sculptures.

Matapacos passed away in 2017 of old age, surrounded by caretakers and a veterinarian. However, his legacy endured. During the 2019 Chilean protests, his image resurfaced as a powerful symbol of resistance, with many calling for a public statue to commemorate his contributions to the movement.
